Lorca reborn in Waterloo
What does a Spanish writer who died almost one hundred years ago have to say about our contemporary lives here in London?
The answer is almost everything.
Ask any Spaniard the question of who is the greatest writer that ever lived and many will tell you Federico García Lorca. Ask the same question to Londoners who passionately love theatre and most will agree. Musician, poet, dramatist, puppeteer, community theatre advocate, and all-round showman, Lorca had a talent (and a humanity) that rivalled Shakespeare, Ibsen, Chekhov and Tennessee Williams. That he was assassinated in 1936 at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War remains a national tragedy.
Yerma, the second of his trilogy of rural plays, is much less performed than his most famous drama The House of Bernarda Alba, but it is arguably his finest work. It speaks profoundly to the importance of creativity to our wellbeing, woman’s continual struggle for dignity and self-expression in a patriarchal society, the perils of relying on technology for our happiness, and cautions on the dire consequences of a lack of appreciation for the mystery and beauty of nature. A version of the play starring Billie Piper was performed back in 2016 at the Young Vic to great acclaim but it was not based on Lorca’s original with its extraordinary combination of drama, song, dance, laughter, poetry, spectacle, and sublime artistic expression. Join us at Network Theatre in July to discover, experience and celebrate the genius of one of the greatest writers who ever lived.
A brand new translation of Lorca’s original play Yerma will be performed for the first time at the Network Theatre in Waterloo from 10-13 July, Tickets are £15 plus booking fee.
