As the academic year kicks off, university campuses come alive with the buzz of freshers’ week. London South Bank University (LSBU) is no exception, particularly with Hannah (who is currently on a placement year with the BID as part of her degree at LSBU) and Zan there to represent WeAreWaterloo and showcase STAR Card, encouraging students to explore and support local businesses.
WeAreWaterloo, in partnership with South Bank BID, introduced the STAR Card in 2017. The STAR Card is a local offers scheme designed to encourage employees, residents, and students to explore Waterloo and South Bank while supporting local businesses.
Our table at the Freshers Fair had a fun Spin Wheel activity that caught the attention of many students. By downloading STAR Card, using a QR code on the table, students were granted the opportunity to spin the wheel and win a range of prizes. Prizes included WeAreWaterloo-branded water bottles, £5 Lower Marsh Market vouchers and coupons to use at local businesses. These local businesses, including Greensmiths, Sista Barista, V+V Juicebar, T4, Calder Bookshop and Theatre, generously offered discounts or free products, motivating students to explore the local area.
Ultimately, LSBU Freshers Fair 2023 was a success with 100+ STAR Cards downloaded in just two hours. Students had a great time spinning the wheel and winning offers and prizes. These business offers allow students to enjoy perks from businesses they may not have otherwise explored, welcoming them to actively engage in the community.
