This evening’s magical journey begins in Armenia with the captivating work by Khachaturian, Trio for clarinet violin and piano. It evokes colourful images reminiscent of the perfumed exotic charm of Tales from the Arabian Nights through the use of quiet melancholy themes as well as wild and colourful whirlwind dances.
You will then hear the music of Stravinsky, l’Histoire du soldat, the story of a soldier. The piece blends narrative, music, and dance to depict a soldier’s tragic encounter with the devil, who tricks him into trading his violin (symbolizing his soul) for wealth.
To conclude the evening, you will travel to France for the music of Poulenc, l’Invitation au château. The piece accompanies Jean Anouilh’s play, a satire on aristocratic superficiality centred on a complex web of romantic entanglements at a high-society ball. Poulenc’s music, with waltzes, tango, and tarantella, mirrors the play’s lively and whimsical tone, while his unique melodies and harmonies add depth beyond the frivolity.
Theatre on the River presents the world premiere of “Toy Soldier”.
