WAW Secures £15,000 to Transform Historic St George’s Circus

Great news for Waterloo! WeAreWaterloo has secured £15,000 in Devolved Highways Funding from Southwark Council following a successful bid to enhance one of London’s historic junctions.

The funding will transform waste management at St George’s Circus, installing a secure bin storage unit that will elevate the area’s appearance and support the thriving business community along London Road.

A landmark location deserves landmark investment

St George’s Circus is no ordinary junction – it’s London’s first purpose-built traffic intersection, dating back to 1771. At its heart stands the Grade II listed obelisk, a remarkable piece of heritage that has witnessed centuries of London history, from early Suffragette rallies to the transformation of our modern city.

Today, the area is a vibrant hub of independent restaurants, businesses, and corporate offices, benefiting from exceptional foot traffic thanks to nearby Waterloo and Southwark stations. This investment recognises the importance of maintaining an environment that matches the area’s historic significance and commercial vitality.

What this means for Waterloo

The new secure bin storage facility will deliver:

  • A modern, enclosed waste management solution
  • Enhanced visual appeal that honours the historic setting
  • Improved experience for the thousands of visitors, workers, and residents who pass through daily
  • Stronger support for local businesses

A win for the whole community

Local businesses have welcomed the project with enthusiasm, recognising it as a significant step forward in creating a cleaner, more attractive environment that befits the area’s heritage and potential.

This investment supports Southwark Council’s priorities around sustainability, public health, and urban enhancement while celebrating what makes Waterloo special.

What’s next

Installation will begin in the coming months, marking an exciting new chapter for St George’s Circus. This success demonstrates the power of community partnership and WeAreWaterloo’s ongoing commitment to championing our neighbourhood and the businesses that make it thrive.

The funding will complement another smaller pot of funding earmarked from Southwark Council to improve the area around St George’s Garden – a pocket park on Blackfriars Road created by WeAreWaterloo.

Here’s to a brighter, cleaner future for one of London’s historic corners!
