From a disused arch to an Off-West End stage in under six months
Waterloo East Theatre opened in September 2010, founded and created by multi-award-winning theatre producer and former musical-theatre actor Gerald Armin. After discovering an unused railway arch in 2009, Armin set out to build a new Off-West End venue to sit alongside the Old Vic, Young Vic and National Theatre in Waterloo’s cultural quarter – bringing it to life in under six months. Take a look at Waterloo East Theatre’s Instagram for some amazing images from the build!
Since opening, the theatre has welcomed 200+ productions, entertaining more than 150,000 ticket holders. Many shows have earned critical acclaim, with Off West End awards wins and nominations. The theatre’s reach has stretched beyond Waterloo too, with plays being developed as feature films and productions transferring to seasons Off-Broadway.
Waterloo East Theatre’s commitment to championing new writing and giving space to new and undiscovered talent, on and off the stage, has given London audiences a rare chance to discover work they might not otherwise see, all from an intimate home beneath the railway.
