Security Spotlights – May

In light of recent developments, we’re sharing important updates to help keep everyone in Waterloo informed and safe.

National Threat Level Raised to Severe

The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) has elevated the UK National Threat Level from SUBSTANTIAL to SEVERE, indicating that an attack is highly likely. This change comes after the recent incident in Golders Green, North London, and also responds to a broader increase in both Islamist and Extreme Right Wing terrorist threats from individuals and small groups within the UK.This heightened threat level is also set against a backdrop of increased state-linked physical threats, encouraging acts of violence. JTAC’s decision is based on comprehensive intelligence and analysis of factors influencing the threat.

For all of us, this means staying alert but not alarmed. If you notice anything unusual, report it via the ACT Action Counters Terrorism website. Remember, in an emergency, always call 999.

We also recommend you visit ProtectUK | Home where you will find further information and guidance.

Launch of the Run Hide Tell (RHT) Campaign

In response to the changing threat landscape, Counter Terrorism Policing has launched the updated Run Hide Tell (RHT) campaign. This initiative offers practical safety advice and encourages businesses to incorporate the Guide Shelter Report (GSR) into their security plans. We encourage all our members to read the new guidance and ensure relevant procedures are in place. Learn more here.

16 May – Unite The Kingdom Update

After the disruption caused by Unite the Kingdom’s first march in September, we have been working with partners to share evidence of its impact on local residents and businesses with relevant authorities. Discussions have been  ongoing to help ensure that Waterloo is not disproportionately affected in the future.

With this in mind, we can confirm that the route for the upcoming Unite the Kingdom march on 16 May will be located north of the river. Please find below further details about the march and the associated arrangements:

  • As it stands, the planned route is taking place North of the river – the march will end in Parliament Square.
  • The main area of concern is the dispersal towards the end of the march (6pm),  although some people may leave earlier to watch the FA Cup final (3pm kick-off), particularly given Waterloo’s role as a major transport hub.
  • South Bank and Waterloo will have their own ‘Public Order Bronze’ (enhanced police presence) in place for the duration of the march.
  • Some businesses have already taken the decision to close, reduce access, or operate ticketed entry only – you may wish to consider what is appropriate for your business.

We will share more information as soon as we receive it – join our WhatsApp community channel to stay informed and connected. We also encourage you to sign up to Met Engage for local updates.
