On a break with... Melly's Cakes!
Tell us a little about your stall...
My stall is a cornucopia of sweet treats. I take inspiration from my Australia background and my new British home, to create confections with an international twist. From brownies to cupcakes to cookies, to slices there's always something new to treat your tastebuds. Homemade treats with love baked in.
How long have you been baking for?
I have been baking since I was young in my grandparents kitchen, where I gained a lifelong love of baking and eating cake. After I left school I started to bake for people outside my family and since then it has always been my dream to start my own business.
Who's your biggest baking inspiration?
My biggest baking inspiration is my grandfather who still manages to make Christmas plum puddings every year even at 93 years old!
Tell us a little about your proudest creation?
I have invented a few things that I’m proud of but I am still searching for baking perfection.
What is your favourite thing about Lower Marsh?
I love the community, everyone has been so kind and welcoming to me and you can see that they really care for one another.
What did you want to grow up to be when you were a child?
I wanted to be lots of things as a kid, from an Olympic Cyclist to a Human Rights Lawyer working in the United Nations but I soon figured out I had a passion and talent for making delicious treats.
Who inspires you?
I'm inspired by the many other independent market traders in London; especially the people I have met on Lower Marsh Market. Every day, rain or shine they come down to the market to do what they love.
Where is your favourite place in the world? My favourite place is my home in Australia where all my family lives, but London has fast become my second home over the past 2 years that I have lived here.
Tell us something we don’t know about you...
I am a huge Lord of the Rings nerd! I once watched all three films back to back at the theatre.
