Make Sure your Business is Recycling Compliant – New Legislation for Businesses from March 2025

From 31st March 2025, all businesses in England (with more than 10 full-time employees) are required to separate recyclable materials from general waste – making recycling simpler and more consistent nationwide.

What does this mean for your business?

If you have more than 10 employees, you must have the following waste services in place:

  •  General Waste
  • Mixed Recycling – for glass, metal, plastics, cartons, paper, and cardboard
  • Food Recycling – for all unavoidable food waste

Don’t worry – WeAreWaterloo and First Mile are here to help you stay compliant and make the transition easy. As a WeAreWaterloo member business, you’re able to receive subsidised mixed recycling and food recycling services, as well as discounts on general waste services with First Mile.

Why act now?

Setting up your services now means:

  • You’ll immediately be compliant with the new legislation – you’ll avoid any fines or enforcement action.
  • You’ll reduce waste costs – recycling is much cheaper than sending material to general waste.
  • You’ll reduce the environmental impact of your business by recycling your materials into new materials, instead of throwing them away.

Plus, food recycling is First Mile’s lowest-cost service – so moving your food waste out of your general waste saves you even more.
