Behind the scenes, our Clean and Green team has been hard at work making Waterloo a more welcoming place for everyone who works, visits and lives here.
From April-June, the team dedicated more than 540 hours to street cleaning, litter picking and sweeping across the BID area, while also removing 32 graffiti tags from businesses and public infrastructure to help keep our streets looking their best.
Our planting programme has continued to flourish too, with 80 new plants added across locations including Hercules Road and Kennington Road during June alone, with even more planting taking place over the summer.
We’re also delighted to celebrate achieving the Green Flag Award for the fourth consecutive year, recognising the high standards of care and management across Waterloo’s public spaces.
Community involvement has been just as important as the work on the ground. Our Rooted lunchtime gardening sessions welcomed 32 participants across four sessions, bringing people together to learn new skills and help care for local green spaces.
Meanwhile, Edible Marsh has inspired local residents and visitors to grow their own food, with more than 60 plants given away during gardening workshops at Lower Marsh Market. The project’s new ‘mini allotment’ at the Tappy stall, planted with tomatoes, rainbow chard, beetroot and basil, demonstrates just how much fresh produce can be grown in even the smallest of spaces.
This summer’s exceptionally dry weather has also highlighted the importance of community support. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered through our Waterloo Watering initiative to help keep Waterloo’s planting healthy during the hot weather. Every watering session makes a real difference.
Together, these efforts are helping to create a greener, cleaner and more vibrant Waterloo for everyone.
