IWM Presents: The Zone of Interest
A Glimpse into the Banality of Evil
Ahead of Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January 2026, IWM London presents a screening of Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar-winning The Zone of Interest. Based on the novel by Martin Amis, the film depicts the life of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, as they strive to build a dream life in the shadow of the concentration camp. The banality of the Höss family’s lives is played out against a backdrop of suffering, barely seen but often heard from their home on Auschwitz’s perimeter.
The film will be followed by a discussion between IWM’s Head of Public History, James Bulgin, who was content lead for IWM London’s Holocaust Galleries, and Professor Barry Langford, who has researched and written on the depiction of the Holocaust in television and on film.
The event will begin with the screening and will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.
