Essential Gas Works on Waterloo Road – 19 January 2026

We would like to make local businesses aware of essential gas mains replacement works taking place on Waterloo Road, being carried out by SGN (Southern Gas Networks) following a recent gas leak at nearby premises that required an evacuation.

What’s happening and when

SGN is scheduled to begin works on Monday 19 January 2026, with an estimated duration of approximately four weeks. The works will involve replacing older metal gas pipes with new plastic pipes to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply for the area.

To allow the works to take place safely, there will be a southbound closure on Waterloo Road, between the junction with The Cut and Exton Street.

A signed diversion will be in place for southbound traffic during this period.

Access to businesses and deliveries

Following discussions with Lambeth Council, it has been confirmed that:

Access to businesses will be maintained throughout the works

All access, including deliveries, will need to be made via the northbound direction only, as the southbound route will be closed at the Waterloo Road roundabout

SGN’s contractor will have a Traffic Management operative on site from 6am to 11pm for the duration of the works, to assist with delivery requirements and access needs

A temporary bus stop will also be located outside The Old Vic during the works, and Exton Street will operate as a one-way street for the duration of the project.

Further information and drop-in session

Some businesses may have already received direct communication from SGN. For those who haven’t, SGN is hosting a virtual drop-in session on:

Thursday 8 January | 4-7pm

This session can be accessed via the QR code included in SGN’s letter and provides an opportunity to ask questions about the works and traffic management.

In addition, SGN’s Communications Officer, Sharon Dorrington, will be attending on-site drop-ins with local businesses during the works to discuss any concerns.
