Take four friends, a passion for the stage and left wing politics, mix in Argentinian and British influences and you have The Bookshop Theatre.

The Bookshop Theatre aka The Calder Bookshop was started in Feb 2011 by a collective of friends who wanted to create their own theatre to put on their own productions, writes Lesley Godbolt.

Today, the not-for-profit shop has a line in quality second hand books, highbrow fact and fiction and literature on plays and performance art.

On Tuesdays a cinema club takes place in the theatre area of the shop, while on other days live performances are held.

Co-founder Luis Gayol tells us the shop is a ‘crazy place’ , which is sometimes jam packed full of lively theatre students, and at other quieter times, sees actors, directors, curious tourists and those with a more serious political agenda browsing the bookshelves.

Our little known fact about The Bookshop Theatre:
One of the founders, Sergio Amigo, runs a course for prisoners at Wandsworth prison and uses the productions to give an opportunity to ex-offenders to work with professional actors.
