Placemaking

The following Placemaking Spotlight is taken directly from our recently published Placemaking Strategy. This is the first of a series of spotlights which will focus on our plans for the various subdistricts of Waterloo. They provide readers with an introductory overview of the area, alongside any progress we have made implementing the strategy.

Introduction:

The Roupell Street Area, named after the conservation area in which it sits, is home to some of London’s best-preserved streets. This means it is frequently used as a set for films and TV seeking a typically ‘London’ or ‘British’ aesthetic. Its exceptional character is markedly different to other areas of Waterloo – this is perhaps felt more keenly because it is visually and physically separated from the rest of Waterloo by the railway viaduct.

Key Features:

  • Roupell Street
  • Windmill Walk
  • Cornwall Road
  • Hatfields
  • Brad Street

Placemaking Principles:

  • Preserve the historic setting and architecture.
  • Respect and respond to historic character.
  • Promote the area’s local businesses.
  • Establish quietways on appropriate streets.

Progress:

  • We were delighted to be invited by Paul Cons (co-owner of prestigious bakery, Konditor) to present our Placemaking Strategy to LERA (Lambeth Estate Residents’ Association) at the newly renovated Crypt at St John’s Waterloo and discuss priority projects for the Roupell Street Area. We are looking forward to implementing suggestions to enhance both cleaning and greening provision in one of London’s best preserved historic neighbourhoods.
  • We have received exciting project proposals from Roupell Street businesses within our Redesign grant scheme. We will review these proposals once applications close for the scheme to decide where we can most effectively allocate this funding.
  • Roupell Street will feature in our upcoming station advertising campaign to encourage Waterloo commuters to explore this beautiful historical gem and visit the wonderful businesses within it.
