We are very pleased to announce WeAreWaterloo has been awarded a £65,000 grant to de-pave part of Hercules Road in order to increase the amount of green space in the Waterloo area. The project will repurpose 300m2 of former road space into fertile land for growing trees, fruits, vegetables and herbs as well as incorporating a sustainable drainage system to help minimise flood risk.
The newly established greenspace will help improve air quality for local residents, pedestrians and cyclists by absorbing the high levels of air pollution currently found on Hercules Road. The removal of the heat emitting tarmac will also reduce the area’s relatively high temperature whilst also providing space for community gardening projects in the planting beds.
The money has been awarded through the Grow Back Greener Fund 2021, which is co-funded by the Mayor of London and Thames Water. The £65,000 grant is the joint highest amount received by the 45 successful urban greening community projects. We will continue to provide updates on the progress of this project with the completion scheduled for summer 2022.
